Chinese Communist Party Slams Pompeo After He Warns U.S. Governors of ‘Friendship’ Groups. A Chinese Communist Party (CCP) mouthpiece lashed out Monday at Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for a weekend speech in which he warned U.S. governors to beware of underhanded CCP activities in their states, some carried out by innocuous-sounding “friendship” groups and cultural bodies. Addressing the National Governors Association’s winter meeting in Washington, Pompeo made clear he was directing his criticism at the CCP, not at the Chinese people. Last year, an event on economic opportunities between and individual U.S. states was co-hosted by the National Governors Association and the “Chinese People’s Association For Friendship and Foreign Countries” – a group which Pompeo described as “the public face of the Chinese Communist Party’s official foreign influence agency.” The CCP controlling nearly every aspect of the activities in the U.S. of Confucius Institutes, which are supposedly solely focused on teaching Mandarin and Chinese culture. He noted that schools in more than 20 states have or will be closing their Confucius Institutes as a result of reviews.
