STRANGE IMAGES OF ‘BLOOD SNOW’ IN ANTARCTICA SHARED BY SCIENTISTS WORKING AT RESEARCH STATION
Ukrainian scientists at a research station in the Antarctic have shared images of a strange phenomenon affecting the area around their base—blood red snow.
The scientists say the red snow that has been visible near the Vernadsky Research Base—located on Galindez Island off the Antarctic’s coast—in the last few weeks is caused by a type of algae known as Chlamydomonas nivalis.
The algae is found around the world in mountainous and polar environments. In fact, C. nivalis is the most common type of algae found in show, according to a study published in the European Journal of Phycology.
Antarctica snow turns ‘blood red’
Snow has taken on a sinister-looking blood red colour at a Ukrainian research station due to a type of algae which contributes to climate change.
For several weeks, scientists working at the Vernadsky Research Base in Antarctica have been surrounded by what they call “raspberry snow”.
Images released by Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science on Monday showed the phenomenon, which is caused by microscope snow algae when weather conditions are favourable during Antarctica’s summer months.
The ministry explained that the algae is able to survive the extreme cold temperatures during the Antarctic winter and begins to sprout when warmer temperatures arrive in the summer (between October and February).
Antarctica is splattered with blood-red snow, images reveal
A Ukrainian polar station in the Antarctic has shared pictures of blood-coloured snow, highlighting another worrying influence of climate change.
Images snapped by a Ukranian team of scientists stationed at the Vernadsky Research Base located on Galindez Island off the Antarctic’s coast show swaths of blood snow covering large areas around the station.
Thankfully, the phenomenon is not a result of an en masse massacre, but has been brought on by tiny algal colonies that typically bloom during Antarctica’s summer months.
Known as Chlamydomonas nivalis, these seaweeds remain dormant in winter and thrive in freezing water when warmer temperatures lead to snow melts.
